Interview Skills
Interviews can be quite daunting! Here are some handy hints to help overcome any nerves and instil confidence for a productive interview with your potential employer.
BE PREPARED
To succeed at any interview, it is essential to research the company first. It will show any interviewer that you are knowledgeable about the company and interested in the position for which you have applied.
Prepare a list of questions in advance that you would like to ask the Interviewer. Once the interview has reached its final stages, you will usually be asked if you have any questions. Don’t be afraid to ask!
Prepare for questioning. Think about the questions you are likely to be asked and prepare your thoughts on possible answers. Questions may include: What are your strengths? What are your weaknesses? How do you react under pressure and deadlines? Why should we appoint you? Where do you see yourself in five years time? What motivates you? What is your greatest achievement? Why did you leave your last job? Why do you want to leave your current job?
The Interview
If possible, travel to the destination prior to the interview date so that you have a clear understanding of the time it will take.
On the day of the Interview, always leave plenty of time to arrive. This will ensure that you arrive relaxed and prepared. Take the telephone number of the company with you and who you will be meeting. If for any reason, there is a possibility that you will be delayed, either phone the company or telephone your Consultant who will then telephone the Interviewer on your behalf.
Take a pen and notepad with you, together with two copies of your CV.
First Impressions Count.
Ensure that your appearance is smart – appropriate clothes are essential.
When meeting the interviewer(s), smile and shake hands with a firm positive handshake. Be pleasant, poised and maintain eye contact as much as possible.
Be aware of your body language. Don’t sit with your arms folded. Try to be open and relaxed.
Listen carefully to questions; don't be afraid to ask for clarification. Be clear and concise with your answers.
Be honest. You wouldn’t want your employer to lie about your career and salary prospects so stick to the truth about your jobs and qualifications. These things are easily checked out. Always try to support your answers with examples of past achievements. Avoid saying negative things about your last or current employer.
Ask the interviewer your questions. Prepare these in advance and ask at the end of the Interview as this will help demonstrate your interest.
Last impressions are important. Remember to thank the interviewer(s) for their time and reaffirm you interest in the position.
If you are anxious about the Interview, remember your Consultant is available to offer any support and advice you need. Good Luck!
