How to write a Successful CV
To provide the best chance of securing your ideal job, take time in writing/updating your CV to ensure that it accurately sells your experience.
Each CV is as individual as the person writing it. Your CV should be your own and reflect your talents and personality. However, it is important to follow a few basic principles to ensure you present the information in a clear, concise and effective manner.
Layout
Always type your CV.
Keep it simple – use bullet points, tabs and bold to make it easier to read. Choose a clear font such as Arial.
Be succinct and concise. A brief and easily readable CV is more likely to be considered and should be no more than 3 pages in length.
Check then double check for spelling and grammar. Don't rely solely on the computer's spell check - use a dictionary. If a CV has typing errors, it shows a lack of attention to detail.
Double check all dates and qualifications. Inaccuracies in dates will be noticed by a potential employer.
Content
Avoid waffling or adding too much information that is irrelevant to a prospective Employer. Keep it brief, factual and above all, honest.
Remember, your Personal Profile will be the first thing that a potential employer reads. Take your time in writing this section as first impressions count.
Your Employment history should be listed in reverse chronological order. Begin with your current/most recent position first. This should ideally be on the first page. Describe your responsibilities, duties and main achievements.
Ensure that you state ‘reason for leaving’ or whether a position was on a contract/temporary basis only.
Don't leave any employment gaps, ensuring all your time is accountable. It is advisable to explain if you have switched jobs frequently or travelled.List all school, university and professional qualifications (including grades and dates). Highest level of attainment should be listed first.
Skills – include specific skills such as IT skills and languages. Make sure you include your current level of spoken/written fluency as well.
Hobbies and Interests – Optional. It can provide your employer with a more complete picture of your personal qualities but do not overdo it.
